USD 415 advances facilities plan at second community meeting

(KNZA)--Hiawatha USD 415 is moving forward with its long-term facilities planning process following a second community meeting held April 22nd in the high school auditorium.

More than 60 residents attended the session, where representatives from Lighthouse Construction, HCK Architects, and Piper Sandler presented early design concepts and reviewed potential bond funding options while gathering community feedback. A survey conducted during the meeting showed strong support for building a new elementary school rather than renovating the existing building—a preference also echoed in recent discussions with staff and teachers.

Three bond options were outlined for voters: The first is a 25-million-dollar plan to renovate the current elementary school and add a gymnasium. The second is a 30-million-dollar option involving a major expansion and renovation of the existing building. The third, at 35 million dollars, would fund construction of a completely new elementary school west of the middle school.

All three options include secure entry renovations at both the middle and high schools, as well as improvements to wood and agricultural shop areas at the high school.

Officials also outlined estimated property tax impacts for each option. The district’s 2015 bond, approved by voters for previous improvements, is scheduled to be paid off in 2028. The master facilities plan is expected to be finalized next month.
