Hiawatha Commission approves fireworks proposal, new scoreboard

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved allowing “safe and sane” fireworks within city limits this year after rejecting a similar proposal earlier this month. The measure passed on a 4-0 vote Tuesday night, with Commissioner Tom Martin absent.

Residents will be allowed to discharge fireworks on July 3 and 4 from noon until 9 p.m. “Safe and sane” fireworks are consumer-grade items that do not explode or leave the ground, including fountains, sparklers, ground spinners and smoke bombs.

In other business, commissioners approved the purchase of a new scoreboard for Paul Rockey Field at Noble Park at a cost of $25,445. The project is a partnership between the city, Rainbow Communications and Amberwell Hiawatha. Rainbow and Amberwell will each contribute $10,000 toward the purchase.

City Administrator Brad Scott said the current scoreboard is obsolete, has required repeated repairs and is difficult to read because of evening sun glare. The new scoreboard will be moved to left-center field and will include a pitch-count feature.

New electrical lines will have to be run to the scoreboard. The electrical work will be conducted by an electrician, but the installation of the scoreboard itself will be done by city staff.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of two new computers for the water plant telemetry system at a cost of nearly $33,000 from Integrated Controls Incorporated.
