Check fraud from U.S. Mail

(KLZA)--The Nemaha County Nebraska Sheriff's Department is alerting area businesses and residents of a check fraud involving payments sent through the U.S. Mail.

Criminals are stealing checks from mailboxes as well as collection boxes in addition to mailrooms and delivery points after the mail has been delivered.
Checks are then altered or fraudulently deposited.
Some tips to help stop the thefts include: considering electronic payments.

Avoid leaving outgoing mail in mailboxes overnight.
Deposit checks inside a post office or secure collection box before the final daily pickup.
Retrieve incoming mail promptly, not allowing it to sit in delivery locations.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of check fraud or mail theft should contact your local police or Sheriff's Department. Reports can also be made to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
