(KLZA)--The Nemaha County Nebraska Sheriff's Department is warning area businesses and residents about an increase in check fraud involving payments sent through the U.S. Mail.
Authorities say criminals are stealing checks from residential mailboxes, collection boxes, mailrooms, and delivery points after mail has been delivered. The stolen checks are then altered or fraudulently deposited.
The Sheriff's Department is offering several tips to help prevent mail theft and check fraud:
• Consider using electronic payment methods when possible.
• Avoid leaving outgoing mail in mailboxes overnight.
• Deposit checks inside a post office or secure collection box before the final daily pickup.
• Retrieve incoming mail promptly and avoid letting mail sit in delivery locations.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of check fraud or mail theft is encouraged to contact their local police department or sheriff's office. Reports can also be made to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
