Youth escape in Jefferson Co leads to chase, injuries for deputy

(KAIR)--An alleged assault on a Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy by a juvenile in custody Tuesday afternoon led to a short foot chase before the youth was captured and the deputy treated for injuries.

WIBW-TV reports the incident happened around 4:00 Tuesday afternoon near the Williamstown community, about three miles east of Perry, near U.S. 24 and U.S. 59, when the deputy was transporting the juvenile to the Douglas County Youth Detention Center on two counts of felony auto theft and criminal damage. The juvenile, it's alleged, slipped one of the cuffs off and struck the deputy on the side of her head.

WIBW says the juvenile fled but was captured a short time later by the deputy who was then transported by Jefferson County Ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released.

WIBW, citing Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, reports the juvenile was transported to the Douglas County Youth Detention Center following the capture and will now face additional charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated escape from custody, and criminal damage to property.

The Kansas Highway Patrol was among agencies that responded to the scene.
