Hiawatha teen faces multiple charges after vehicle pursuit

(KNZA)--A Hiawatha teen is facing multiple charges following an early morning police pursuit.

According to a release from the Hiawatha Police Department, Officer Austin Coffelt was performing traffic enforcement in the 400 block of South 1st Street around 3:10 a.m. Tuesday when he observed a vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit.

Officer Coffelt attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on the vehicle, which failed to yield to the police car’s emergency lights and siren. A vehicle pursuit followed in which the driver allegedly committed over five separate moving violations.

Ultimately the driver, a 14-year-old Hiawatha resident, was taken into custody. The juvenile’s parents responded to the Police Station and were appraised of the situation.

The following charges will be requested from the Brown County Attorney’s Office:

K.S.A. 8-1568 – Felony Evading

K.S.A. 8-1557 – Speeding Violations

K.S.A. 8-1528 – Stop Sign Violations

K.S.A. 8-1548 – Turn Signal Violations

The driver was placed in juvenile detention.

Anyone with information pertinent to the investigation is asked to contact the Hiawatha Police Department at (785) 742-2156.
