(KAIR)--The Atchison community is coming together to honor the Soul Tree, the long-standing landmark on the west side of LFM Park that fell in the early morning hours of June 16th during extreme winds.
The Atchison Juneteenth Committee invites the public to a Soul Tree Memorial gathering Friday evening, June 26, at 6:00, hosted by Kenny Smith and Lonnie Dudley, under the picnic pavilion on 7th Street.
Meanwhile, the Atchison Art Association is calling on artists, designers, and community members to submit proposals for a sculptural memorial that would permanently commemorate the Soul Tree and its historical and cultural significance to Atchison. The association describes the tree as a symbol of remembrance, resilience, and reflection that has stood in the community's collective memory for generations.
Design submissions are due by August 1st and may be dropped off at the Cultural Center on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon.
A jury made up of representatives from the Art Association, the City of Atchison, and the Juneteenth Committee will review all entries.
The winning design will receive a $200 cash prize, and the Art Association will work alongside the selected artist to bring the memorial to life.
