Drainage complaint leads to action by Hiawatha Commission

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has agreed to move forward with addressing a storm water drainage problem at a local residence.

During Monday night's meeting, resident Micha Romines told commissioners that a storm drain in front of his home at North 6th Street and Cherokee Avenue is unable to handle the volume of water flowing into it during heavy rains.

Romines said the drain collects runoff from more than 10 blocks and frequently backs up into his driveway, flooding his garage and causing damage to both the personal property inside and structure.

He told commissioners that he and neighboring residents have raised concerns about the issue several times over the past year without a solution.

City Administrator Brad Scott said a proper fix will require the installation of additional storm water inlets along both 6th Street and Cherokee Avenue.

Near the end of the meeting, Commissioner Brian Shefferd revisited the issue and urged action. Commissioner Laura Tollefson then made a motion directing the city to move forward immediately with addressing the drainage problem. The motion was approved unanimously.
