(KLZA)--The organization Fairness for Girls submitted more than 211,000 signatures supporting putting the issue of who can play girls sports on the ballot in November on Tuesday.
Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen must certify the signatures to confirm that the proposed amendment can go before voters — the group needs signatures from 10% of registered voters, or about 125,000.
Initiative sponsor, former First District State Senator Julie Slama, said girls' sports need lasting protection.
Trans athletes participating in sports is an issue that has faced intensified political scrutiny in recent years, though there has only been a few trans Nebraskans participate in school sports.
Once on the ballot, Fairness for Girls must rally to win support from a majority of voters to amend the constitution. Nebraska would be the first state to place a policy on student-athletes' sex in its top legal document.
The proposed amendment in Nebraska would require schools to designate sports based on biological sex: for males, for females or for co-ed. Teams designated for females "shall not be open to students of the male sex."
The amendment would apply to K-12 schools, colleges and levels of competition ranging from intramurals to varsity. It also applies to private schools that compete against public schools.
