According to a release from Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie, the first crash happened around 3:50 Tuesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 59 near Cummings, when 36-year-old Tina Scherer, of Valley Falls, was southbound near Neosho Road. It was then that a deer crossed the road and struck the windshield and roof, going partially through the windshield on the driver's side of the SUV.
Scherer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Atchison County EMS to Topeka's Stormont Vail for treatment.
The second crash happened that evening around 6:45 on 286th Road near Finny Road where, Laurie says, a car driven by 32-year-old Shyann Stepp, of Huron, left the roadway, struck a steel guard rail and road signs, and came to rest in a ditch in a corn field.
Following the investigation, Stepp was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and taken to the Atchison County Jail.
According to Laurie, Stepp was not transported by EMS but was later evaluated at Amberwell for minor injuries.
