Hiawatha School Board moves monthly meetings to Wednesdays

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha School Board will hold its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month during the 2026-27 school year.

The board approved the schedule change during Monday night's meeting, citing conflicts between Monday meetings, school activities, and Hiawatha City Commission meetings. The new schedule takes effect with the board's next meeting on August 12.

Board members also approved district fees and meal prices for the coming school year. Breakfast and lunch prices will increase by 10 cents, while the band instrument rental fee will rise from $50 to $75. A decision on increasing athletic pass fees was tabled until the board's August meeting.

Following executive session, the board accepted the resignations of seventh-grade English language arts teacher Lisa Twombly and high school math teacher and boys golf coach Gordon Gunderson, both effective at the end of the 2026-27 school year. The board also accepted the resignation of high school softball coach Sherri Nelson and approved the hiring of Emily Shills as board office administrative assistant.

Monday's meeting was the first led by new Board President Ryan Patton and new Superintendent Kyley Gatz.
