(KNZA)--There's a vacancy on the Jefferson County Commission.

County Clerk Julie Dunkle told MSC News that longtime 3rd District Commissioner Richard Malm announced his retirement resignation at the County Commission's July 6th meeting, effective immediately.

Malm expressed his gratitude to the county and provided a brief recap of his many years of service as commissioner.

Malm, a Valley Falls Republican, had served on the  Commission since 2009.  He also previously served on the board from 1985 to 1989.

Dunkle said his unexpired term will be filled pursuant to statute.  Members of the 3rd District Republican precinct committee will meet Tuesday evening ( July 21st) at 7:00 at the Ozawkie Community Building to select a replacement.  The name will be forwarded to Governor Kelly, who will make the official appointment.
