(KNZA)--A public health advisory has been issued for Pony Creek Lake in Brown County because of blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, announced Friday that the lake north of Sabetha has been placed under a warning advisory.

Pony Creek Lake is one of nine Kansas lakes currently under warning status. Health officials say people should avoid contact with the water. Fish caught from the lake may still be eaten if they're rinsed with clean water and only the fillets are consumed. All other parts of the fish should be discarded.

State officials investigate public lakes when reports of possible blue-green algae blooms are received. Advisories are based on field observations and water sample results that indicate potentially harmful conditions.
