(KNZA)--An Elwood man has been sentenced to prison after pleading no contest to a felony child sex charge.
According to Doniphan County District Court records, 67-year-old John Umphress was sentenced July 8 to two years in prison for aggravated indecent solicitation of a child.
Following his prison sentence, Umphress will serve 36 months of probation. He also will be subject to lifetime post-release supervision and must register as a sex offender.
Umphress entered a no-contest plea to the amended charge in May. He had originally been charged with aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
The case stems from an alleged sex crime involving a child under the age of 14 in May 2024. Umphress was arrested in November 2024 after an investigation by the Elwood Police Department.
