(KNZA)--The Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas has scheduled a recall vote for Tribal Council member Gail Cheatham.

According to information released by the tribe, a recall petition was submitted by tribal members on July 7. Petition signatures were verified on July 13, with 401 valid signatures confirmed. The tribe's constitution requires signatures from 30 percent of qualified voters, or 392 signatures, for a recall effort to move forward.

The Tribal Council met July 16 and set a General Council meeting for Saturday, August 1, at 10 a.m. at the Kickapoo Community Building on Falcon Road near Horton.

Under the tribe's constitution, Cheatham will have the opportunity to speak in her own defense before qualified tribal members vote on whether to recall her. If the recall is approved, tribal members will then elect someone to serve the remainder of the unexpired term.

Cheatham was removed from her position as tribal chairperson by a Tribal Court order on March 5. The court allowed her to remain on the Tribal Council while appointing Vice Chairperson Nellie Cadue as interim chairperson.

Cheatham has served on the Tribal Council since September 2023.

No public reason has been announced for the recall effort.
