(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Valley Falls public water supply system in Jefferson County.

Residents are advised to boil water for one minute before drinking or using it for food preparation, or to use bottled water instead. 

The advisory went into effect on July 28th and will remain in place until the conditions leading to the advisory are resolved. State health officials say the advisory was issued after a waterline break resulted in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Loss of pressure can lead to a drop in chlorine levels and increase the risk of bacterial contamination.

The advisory remains in place until further notice from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

A release from the City of Valley Falls explains that the advisory follows a water main break that occurred Tuesday on Frazier Street. Repaired by later Tuesday afternoon, the release explains the break "was caused during utility construction associated with the City's infrastructure improvement project."
