At Monday's meeting, commissioners reviewed a letter from the Kansas State Historic Preservation Office, which determined placing the monument in the courthouse square courtyard would negatively impact the historic courthouse and surrounding historic district.
Commissioners voted unanimously to ask the Freedom Rock Foundation to find another site for the project in order to preserve the county's historic district designation.
Commissioners emphasized they support the Freedom Rock project, but not its proposed location in the courthouse courtyard.
