Elkhorn Lake in Jackson County under algae advisory

(KNZA)--A Jackson County lake has been placed under a public health advisory because of blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks have placed Elkhorn Lake, next to Rafters Park in Holton, under watch status.

Meanwhile, Pony Creek Lake in Brown County has been downgraded from warning to watch status. The two lakes are among 11 statewide currently on the watch list.

For lakes under watch status, KDHE recommends avoiding direct contact with the water. Fish should be cleaned with potable water, and only the fillet portion should be eaten.

The advisories will be lifted once algae cell counts and toxin levels fall below watch thresholds.
