The recognition highlights Peru State College’s unique ability to blend its historic liberal arts foundation with innovation and programs designed to meet the needs of today’s students and workforce.
Founded in 1867 as Nebraska’s first institution of higher learning, Peru State has spent nearly 160 years evolving to meet the changing needs of students and communities while remaining grounded in its mission of providing an education that prepares students to contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
“We are proud of our long history as a campus where everyone has a place,” said Dr. Robert Mock, President of Peru State College. “This recognition reflects the work of our faculty, staff, and students who continue to build on our legacy while creating new opportunities for the future.”
Education Insider Magazine’s feature, Rooted in Legacy, Growing Toward Tomorrow, highlights Peru State’s three academic schools: the School of Education, School of Arts and Sciences, and School of Professional Studies. With more than 70 academic options, students can pursue areas ranging from education, business, healthcare, and technology to biology, chemistry, fine arts, criminal justice, psychology, and more.
The college’s liberal arts foundation is reflected in its emphasis on critical thinking, adaptability, communication, creativity, and analytical skills. These competencies prepare students to navigate an evolving workforce while developing the knowledge and perspective necessary to become engaged members of their communities.
The recognition also highlights Peru State’s commitment to creating accessible pathways to higher education. Through its One Rate, Any State initiative, students pay the same low in-state tuition rate regardless of residency. Combined with growing online degree offerings and PERU FIRST, the college's dual enrollment and early entry program, Peru State is creating flexible, affordable pathways for learners across Nebraska and beyond.
Beyond the classroom, students have opportunities to participate in more than 30 clubs and organizations, engage in community service, pursue leadership experiences, and compete in 15 varsity athletic programs. These experiences complement the college’s academic mission by helping students grow personally and professionally while building connections that extend beyond campus.
The college’s focus on serving students and communities is also evident through programs such as the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP), which helps prepare students from rural communities for careers in healthcare, and the Corrections Leadership Scholarship Program, which supports Criminal Justice students pursuing careers with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

The Education Insider Magazine recognition comes as Peru State College looks toward its 160th anniversary in June 2027. As the college prepares to celebrate nearly 160 years of educational impact, it continues to build on its legacy through expanded academic opportunities, community partnerships, student experiences, and a continued commitment to affordability and access.
