According to a release from Atchison Fire Chief Patrick Weishaar, crews were called to 1134 Atchison Street at approximately 10:20 Thursday morning for a report of smoke coming from the residence.
On arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from both floors of the home. No one was home at the time, and firefighters were able to quickly enter the building to ventilate the space and search for the fire’s base.
Weishaar says a UTV parked in the basement garage had caught fire, sending smoke throughout the home and causing fire to begin spreading to the structure above.
Firefighters extinguished the flames, limiting damage to the building. Crews remained on scene to check for extensions of the fire, and the department's investigator was called to determine what caused the UTV fire.
No injuries were reported.
The investigation continues.
Weishaar credits the assistance provided by Atchison Police, Atchison County EMS, the Atchison City Water Department, Kansas Gas, and Evergy, with coordination from Atchison County Communication Center dispatchers.
