(KAIR)--The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for the Lakeside Village Improvement District public water supply system in Jefferson County.  

Under the advisory, customers are urged to boil water for one minute before drinking it or using it for food preparation. Bottled water is also recommended as an alternative.  

The advisory took effect on August 9 and will remain in place until the conditions that caused the risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.  

State health officials say the advisory was issued because of equipment failure that led to low chlorine levels in the system. The lack of required chlorine levels could leave the system at risk for bacterial contamination.
