(KNZA)--A public health advisory is in effect for Hiawatha City Lake due to the presence of blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks issued the advisory Friday.

Hiawatha City Lake is among 11 Kansas lakes currently under a watch status. Also on the list are Pony Creek Lake north of Sabetha and Elkhorn Lake near Rafters Park in Holton.

Under a watch, direct contact with the water should be avoided, especially near visible algae blooms. Fish should be cleaned thoroughly with potable water, and only the fillet portion should be eaten.

The advisory will be lifted when algae levels and toxin concentrations fall below the watch thresholds.
