(KNZA)--Brown County commissioners are considering new zoning regulations that would prohibit large data centers and commercial battery energy storage facilities.
The County Planning Commission recommended the change following a public hearing earlier this month. The recommendation follows an 18-month development moratorium enacted by the county.
At Monday’s meeting, County Counselor Austin Parker said the proposed prohibition would be constitutional, but noted companies could still build the facilities in neighboring counties.
Parker recommended setting a one-megawatt threshold for data centers, saying smaller, non-commercial facilities should not be prohibited.
All three commissioners voted to send the matter back to the Planning Commission for consideration of an exception for non-commercial data centers operating below the one-megawatt threshold.
