(KNZA)--A public health advisory is now in effect for Mission Lake in Brown County because of blue-green algae.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks issued the advisory Friday.
Mission Lake is among 11 Kansas lakes currently under a watch status. Three other area lakes are also on the list: Hiawatha City Lake and Pony Creek Lake in Brown County, and Elkhorn Lake in Jackson County.
KDHE says people should avoid areas where algae is accumulating. Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.
Boating and fishing are considered safe, but fish should be cleaned thoroughly with potable water, and only the fillet portion should be eaten.
The advisory will remain in effect until algae and toxin levels fall below the state's watch thresholds.
