Jackson County RNR hearing Wednesday

(KNZA)--Jackson County residents will have an opportunity this week to comment on the county's proposal to exceed the revenue neutral tax rate.

A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, in the first floor meeting room of the Jackson County Courthouse in Holton.

The county is proposing a 2027 mill levy of 75 mills, an increase of nearly 4.6 mills from the current rate. To remain revenue neutral, the tax rate would need to be set at 68.3 mills.

County officials say the proposed increase is intended to help replenish dwindling cash reserves and maintain necessary county services. Commissioners are also considering cuts in funding for several local organizations.

The county's formal budget hearing will be held separately on September 14, giving commissioners time to consider public feedback before finalizing the budget.
