(KMZA)--The Seneca City Council has approved a charter ordinance allowing the city to issue bonds to help finance a new electrical substation and backup generator project.
The council took the action during its August 19 meeting. The charter ordinance is subject to a 60-day protest petition period before taking effect.
The project includes construction of a new electrical substation and three backup generators at the site of a former ballfield in the southwest part of Seneca.
City officials say the project is designed to allow Seneca to decouple from Evergy's distribution system, potentially saving the city about $750,000 annually.
In other business, the council approved a street closure request from NEK-CAP for its Touch A Truck event September 17.
Eighth Street will be closed from Nemaha Street to Pioneer Street from 4 until 6 that afternoon.
And City Administrator Steve Brooks introduced new Recreation Director Lori Gray, who began work this month. Gray replaces Jordan Weaver, who resigned last November.
