"Advertising disguised as an official invoice" targets Atchison Catholic Church

(KAIR)--Atchison's St. Benedict Parish says it "was brought to [their attention] [the parish's] bulletin and website advertisers have been targeted" with what they're calling "a solicitation for advertising disguised as an official invoice."

In a social media post, the parish said the solicitations are being sent by an advertising company using the website Local Catholic Churches dot com. The company is not affiliated with St. Benedict Parish or its bulletin publisher.

The parish is advising advertisers not to send the company any money. Legitimate advertising calls for the parish would come from the Catholic media and communication company Liturgical Publications, commonly known as LPi.

The website included with the statement, when reviewed by MSC News, presents itself as a resource for locations and Mass times of more than 12,000 Catholic churches. The "about us" section of the website says they "feature local businesses and professionals who wish to help support the Catholic Church listing and increase their business as well."

The parish, with its post, did include a screenshot of the solicitation, which also prominently features support for well known charities, and a price tag of $395 for the ad cost, as well as an official looking "reply by" date.

While appearing as an invoice, the solicitation does, at it's end, include the disclaimer that the website "is not associated with any Church Bulletin Company."

An online business overview describes the company as "a for-profit private business directory that provides free basic listings for churches while charging commercial advertisers for placement on its pages."
