(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Police Department is reminding drivers to celebrate responsibly and drive sober this upcoming Labor Day weekend.
Hiawatha Police are joining law enforcement agencies nationwide in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which runs through September 7th.
Drivers can expect an increased law enforcement presence on local roads throughout the holiday weekend.
Police say even a small amount of alcohol can affect your ability to drive, and a first-time DUI can cost more than 10-thousand dollars in fines and legal fees.
Officials urge anyone planning to drink to designate a sober driver, call a taxi or rideshare, or find another safe way home.
If you see a suspected drunk driver, contact local law enforcement.
