Doniphan County finalizes 2027 budget

(KNZA)--The 2027 Doniphan County budget has been finalized.

County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to approve the about $15.5 million budget after adopting a resolution to exceed the revenue-neutral tax rate.

The budget carries an estimated tax rate of 40.25 mills, nearly 2.6 mills above the revenue-neutral rate, and calls for the county to collect nearly $6.6 million in property tax revenue.

Commission Chairman Wayne Grable said the county has held property tax revenue near revenue neutral since 2019 and now faces the need to replace cash reserves or reduce services. The budget also includes departmental reductions and funds for future operations at the Doniphan County Transfer Station.

Several residents raised concerns about increasing property valuations and the county's tax base during the hearings.

The commission also approved the 2027 budget for Doniphan County Ambulance District No. 1. The ambulance levy will be reduced from one mill to a half-mill, with the district also receiving revenue from a one-percent emergency services sales tax.
