A release from Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson says officers responded to the 100 block shortly after 4:00, learning the accident happened when an SUV, driven by 41-year-old Joan Lowdon, of Bonner Springs, was northbound on River Road. She was, police say, merging into traffic from a parked position when her vehicle struck a bicycle ridden by 49-year-old Samuel Wilbur, of Atchison, who had also been northbound on the roadway.
Wilbur was transported by Atchison County EMS to Amberwell Atchison for hospital treatment of his injuries.
