September budget related hearings set for Atchison's USD 409

(KAIR)--Atchison Public Schools will hold two September public hearings focused on the proposed budget that would increase district spending and property taxes.

USD 409 is proposing nearly $41.3 million in total expenditures for the 2026–2027 school year, compared with about $33.5 million during the previous year. The district would levy more than $7.3 million in taxes, an increase of about $944,000.

The proposed tax rate is 56.646 mills, compared with 52.582 mills last year. That exceeds the district’s revenue neutral rate of 49.836 mills. Revenue neutral is the rate that would generate the same property tax dollars as the previous year.

The revenue neutral rate hearing will begin Monday evening, September 14, at 5:45. The proposed budget hearing will follow at 5:50.

Both hearings will be held at the USD 409 Board of Education Office at 626 Commercial Street in Atchison. Families, staff and community members may attend.
