In a release issued late Tuesday morning, the City of Atchison said staff discovered that an unknown liquid had been released from a storage tank at Maczuk Industries, located at 814 River Road, and is believed to be the cause of the noxious odor.
The city notified the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and representatives of the company.
Based on information provided by Maczuk Industries, city officials believe the liquid is a corn-based product that poses no health danger beyond the unpleasant odor.
The city is working with the company and KDHE to clean up the spill and eliminate the smell as quickly as possible.
