(KNZA)--A public health advisory has been lifted for Pony Creek Lake in Brown County, while advisories remain in place for two other area lakes because of blue-green algae.

That word came Friday in a joint release from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

Hiawatha City Lake has been elevated from a “watch” to a “warning” status, while Elkhorn Lake in Jackson County remains under a “watch” status.

For lakes under a “watch,” KDHE recommends avoiding areas of algae accumulation and keeping pets away from the water. Fish should be cleaned with potable water, and only the fillet portion should be eaten.

For lakes under a “warning,” direct contact with the water should be avoided. Fish may be eaten if rinsed with clean water, but only the fillet portion should be consumed.

Advisories are lifted when algae levels and toxin concentrations fall below the “watch” thresholds.
