(KAIR)--Atchison water customers may notice a stronger chlorine smell or taste later this month, but city officials say the water will remain safe to drink and use.

The City of Atchison is spreading notice in advance of the upcoming, temporary change in the water disinfection process. In a release, the City says that will begin Monday, September 21, and remain in place for about two weeks.

The city normally uses chloramines, which combine chlorine and ammonia; but, during the routine maintenance process, known as a free chlorine burn, the city will switch to the stronger and faster acting free chlorine disinfectant.

Crews will also open fire hydrants to flush sediment from water lines and distribute the change throughout the system. Residents may see open hydrants or overflowing water storage towers.

Some customers could experience temporarily discolored or cloudy water, a chlorine odor or taste, minor pressure changes or small air pockets. The city recommends running tap water until it clears.

Home kidney dialysis patients should consult their doctors about any necessary changes, while aquarium owners should also monitor chlorine levels.

City officials stress that any color or odor issues are temporary and do not make the water unsafe.
