(KLZA)-- 33-year-old Dmitry Vanderbeek, an inmate at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution has been charged with first-degree murder in the 2023 death of his cellmate, 76-year-old Alfred Thulin.

Vanderbeek will be arraigned in Johnson County District Court on the class 1A felony on October 15. 

Vanderbeek has been serving 12 to 20 years for first-degree assault out of Douglas County.

On Aug. 25, 2023, a Nebraska State Patrol investigator was assigned to investigate the in-custody death of Thulin, who was reportedly found dead in his cell.

Thulin was serving 40 to 80 years and 14 days for first-degree sexual assault on a child and escape out of Hall County and DUI out of Lancaster County.
