(KNZA)--The two candidates vying for the 62nd District Kansas House seat spoke at a candidates forum in Hiawatha Sunday night.

Incumbent Holton Republican Sean Willcott is seeking a second two-year term. He is being challenged by independent candidate Jack Geiger of rural Robinson.

Geiger, a former registered Democrat, describes himself as a fiscal conservative and a strict constitutionalist . He said he has a deep sense of loyalty to Kansas and has always been interested in politics. Geiger previously ran unsuccessfully for Brown County commissioner and served as a township trustee.

Geiger said the state is facing an inflation crisis and has fiscal problems that will require unique solutions.

Willcott describes himself as a small-government conservative. He said he believes life begins at conception and supports the Second Amendment.

Willcott serves on three House committees: Commerce, Labor and Economic Development; Federal and State Affairs; and Social Services Budget.

Willcott said the main concern he hears from constituents is rising property taxes. He said the Legislature is looking at ways to address the issue and believes the state has a spending problem.

Also speaking at the forum were Hiawatha mayor candidate Brian Shefferd, City Commission candidate Mitch Bruning and Brown County Commission candidate Richard Tesoriero.

The forum was hosted by the Brown County Liberty Alliance.
