The Missouri State Patrol said the tractor-trailer was hauling 4,000 pounds of sulfuric acid suspended with nitroglycerin.
An environmental cleaning company out of Kansas City is assisting with the cleanup.
Residents living within one mile of the hazmat spill on I-29 were evacuated from their homes Thursday morning. They were allowed to return to their homes Thursday afternoon.
With interstate traffic being directed to use U.S. Route 59 around the closure. Motorists should follow all signage and law enforcement direction.
Due to uncertainty of the situation with the crash, and traffic being routed through Highway 59, the Mound City School canceled classes on Thursday.
