(KAIR)--A Lancaster woman is being recognized for years of volunteer work and community service across Atchison County.

Virginia Foley has been named the Northeast Kansas Heart of FCE award recipient. The award honors members of Family and Community Education for grassroots involvement in their communities.

Foley, a release announcing the award says, is a longtime member of the Farmerette FCE unit and currently serves as treasurer of the Atchison County FCE Council.

An accomplished quilter, Foley has taught dozens of barn quilt classes and provides leadership for an annual fall quilt retreat that raises money for a senior scholarship. She also designed a quilt used to raise money for a local autism support group and recently shared information about autism awareness at the Amberwell Health Fair.

Foley also volunteers with Saint Ann’s Parish in Effingham and the quilt department at the Atchison County Fair. She is helping organize the first Peace and Patchwork Quilt Show during the state FCE conference in Atchison this October.

Foley says she simply enjoys helping others, adding that someone needs to volunteer, so why not say yes.
