(KNZA)--Brown County Sheriff John Merchant is warning residents about a gift card scam circulating through email.

Fraudulent messages appear to come from recognizable people throughout the county and ask residents to purchase gift cards. Some emails also request the security numbers from the back of the cards.

Merchant says the emails are fraudulent and do not come from the people identified in the messages. Residents are advised to delete the emails immediately and not respond.
