(KMZA)--The Nemaha County Commission is working to lower the proposed tax rate for 2027.

Commissioners reviewed the Road and Bridge and General Fund budgets at their September 14 meeting, making cuts where possible.

The county’s initial budget proposal called for a tax rate of about 51-point-3 mills — nearly 12 mills above the revenue-neutral rate.

That proposal drew a large crowd for the initial budget and revenue-neutral rate hearings on August 24th.

Commissioners say the tax rate is now below the revenue-neutral rate of 39-point-721 mills.

The commission will continue working on the budget, which must be approved and submitted to the state by October first.
