(KNZA)--The public health advisory for Hiawatha City Lake in Brown County has been lifted, but a watch remains in effect for Elkhorn Lake in Jackson County because of blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says Elkhorn Lake is among eight Kansas lakes under a watch status, while 11 lakes remain under warning status.

Under a watch, people should avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets away from the water. Fish should be cleaned with potable water, and only the fillet portion should be eaten.

Advisories are lifted when algae and toxin levels fall below watch thresholds.
