(KAIR)--An Atchison intersection closed because of a sinkhole is temporarily back open to traffic.
In an update released Thursday afternoon, the City of Atchison says crews completed an exploratory excavation at South 6th and Spring streets.
The sinkhole was found to be small and localized, with no large underground voids extending in other directions. The excavated area measured about seven feet wide, seven feet long and seven feet deep.
Crews refilled the hole with rock, allowing the streets to reopen temporarily.
They will return next week to inspect pipes and utilities near the intersection. Any damaged pipes, utilities or drains will then be repaired before the excavation area is filled with concrete.
Drivers are asked to use caution in the area until the permanent repairs are completed.
