(KAIR)--The City of Atchison is alerting residents to a sinkhole beneath the street at the intersection of South 6th and Spring streets.

According to a release issued late Thursday morning by the City, streets around the area are closed while crews excavate the sinkhole to stabilize it. Crews have completed work to locate underground utilities.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.
