Doniphan County eyes child advocacy services

(KNZA)--Doniphan County officials are looking at ways to continue child advocacy and forensic interview services through the Voices of Courage organization.

Voices of Courage Executive Director Melissa Birdsell and Director of Operations Carrie Watkins met Monday with the County Commission and County Attorney Charles Baskins.

Watkins said Doniphan County is currently the only county in Kansas without coverage from a child advocacy center.

She said the organization has been conducting about 20 to 25 child interviews a year for Doniphan County through its Child First program, at no cost to the county.

Birdsell said Voices of Courage has agreements with Missouri counties that pay for the services, and the organization would like to establish a similar agreement with Doniphan County.

Baskins said the service is critical, allowing children to be interviewed as soon as possible following an incident.

Commission Chairman Wayne Grable said the county will explore funding sources to continue the services through a formal memorandum of understanding with Voices of Courage.
