Phone down, full focus needed for pedestrian week; area schools take part

(KAIR)--October is National Pedestrian Safety Month, bringing increased attention to the safety of those walking, biking or using other active forms of transportation.

The Kansas Department of Transportation reminds drivers to slow down, watch for pedestrians and yield at crosswalks. Motorists should never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk and should use extra caution while backing up or driving in low-visibility conditions.

Pedestrians are encouraged to stay focused, make eye contact with drivers, use sidewalks when available and cross streets at marked crosswalks.

The safety message will be reinforced Wednesday, October 7, during Kansas Walk and Roll to School Day. The annual event encourages students and families to walk, bike or roll to school.

Seven Leavenworth schools represent the local area among participants from 30 Kansas school districts.

The event is supported by KDOT’s Safe Routes to School program. Officials say everyone shares responsibility for following traffic signs, signals and other rules of the road.
