Doniphan County seeks warning lights at dangerous intersection

(KNZA)--A Doniphan County resident is asking county officials to help improve safety at a dangerous intersection.

During Monday’s Doniphan County Commission meeting, Dale Wetmore of rural Troy told commissioners about concerns at U.S. Highway 36 and Mesquito Creek Road.

Wetmore said the intersection has been the site of several crashes, including fatalities. He said previous county commissions have contacted the Kansas Department of Transportation about installing warning signals, but no action has been taken.

Wetmore recently spoke with local KDOT supervisor Kenny Peden, who said he would take the request to the local engineer.

Commission Chairman Wayne Grable said KDOT is responsible for the intersection and owns the right-of-way on Mesquito Creek Road almost to the Dollar General driveway. Grable said he would also contact KDOT about the warning signals.

Commissioner Bobby Hall then made a motion to purchase flashing red lights for the stop signs at the north and south intersections of Highway 36 and Mesquito Creek Road, pending KDOT approval.

The motion passed unanimously.
