(KNZA)--Hiawatha Police Chief Dave Villanueva says officers are seeing a marked decrease in speeding violations in local school zones.
Villanueva says the department’s school-zone enforcement campaign will continue, including monitoring commercial vehicles such as grain hoppers, cement trucks and other large vehicles.
He says officers have already stopped commercial vehicles during enforcement details.
Hiawatha will also participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Speeding Catches Up with You” campaign from October 8th through the 19th.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra travel time, avoid distractions and share the road safely with pedestrians and other vehicles.
More than 11-thousand people were killed in speeding-related crashes nationwide in 2024.
