(KNZA)--The Brown County Commission has approved a mural honoring local Purple Heart recipients.
The commission took the action Monday, with plans to have the mural completed by Veterans Day.
Commissioner Richard Tesoriero said Brown County was declared a Purple Heart County in April, but he wanted to do more to recognize local veterans.
Tesoriero reached out to a mural artist and received permission from the property owner to use the wall at Sixth and Oregon streets.
The mural will be funded through donations.
Tesoriero says about 30 to 40 Purple Heart recipients have been identified in Brown County, and their names will be added as recipients are identified.
Seven Purple Heart recipients are still living, and Tesoriero hopes to have them attend the mural dedication on Veterans Day.
He’s also working with the Kansas Department of Transportation to get approval for signs at highway entrances recognizing Brown County as a Purple Heart County.
