Hiawatha reminds residents of trailer parking rules

(KNZA) — Hiawatha police are reminding residents that unhitched trailers cannot be parked or left standing on public streets or alleys.

Police Chief Dave Villanueva says city ordinances require trailers to be parked on the owner's property, on an approved surface such as concrete or gravel.

Trailers may be on the street for up to two hours in a 24-hour period while being loaded or unloaded, but they must remain hitched to a towing vehicle.

Residents needing additional time can request an extension from the police department. Approval depends on traffic safety and the ability to move the trailer if needed in an emergency.

Violators could face fines of 25 to 150 dollars, up to 30 days in jail, or both. Trailers may also be towed at the owner's expense.

Residents needing an extension or more information can contact the Hiawatha Police Department at 785-742-2155.
