(KNZA)--A longtime Hiawatha school crossing guard is being remembered following his death Monday.
Jim Rupe was 84. For 10 and a half years, he helped middle school students safely cross First Street.
He was known for his big smile and friendly wave to passersby.
Rupe was recently recognized as a Hometown Hero by the MSC Radio Network after being nominated by a local resident.
He and his wife, Barbara, moved to Hiawatha in 1964 after his service in the U.S. Navy. Barbara died in July.
Survivors include a daughter, Christy Metz.
A celebration of life is planned at the Hiawatha First Presbyterian Church, with details to be announced.
